Senator Cogdill Discusses the Importance of
Senator Dave Cogdill:
Hi, this is Senator Dave Cogdill, filling in for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with this week's California Report.
This week, the Governor and I traveled across the state to talk about the importance of water storage for the future of For years, water supply has been a pressing issue ignored at the Capitol.
But Our current system cannot protect us from heavy rain flow in wet years or get us through drought in dry years.
It cannot guarantee enough water for our crops or for our growing population and economy.
And the hub of our system, the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, faces serious threats from earthquakes, storms and rising sea levels. Overall, this spells a disaster waiting to happen. We simply can't wait for that disaster - and that's why we are acting now.
For the first time in decades, we have a Governor who is willing to stand up and lead on this issue.
And with the help of his administration and others in the Legislature, we have put together a bill to improve Our bill would authorize $5.95 billion in bonds for storage, sustainability and conservation.
It's important to point out here that we include money for both reservoirs and below-ground storage.
Above-ground reservoirs are our best defense against seasonal flooding and they capture and store winter rainfall for future use.
We also devoted $1 billion to protect the Delta and ensure that it remains the nation's largest source of drinking water.
And we included funds for water conservation programs and restoration projects throughout the state.
As the Governor said, it is our responsibility not only think 1 year ahead, or 2 years ahead, but to think 10, 20, 30 and 40 years ahead. So I am joining him in telling everyone, including the members of the Legislature, that it is time for a comprehensive water solution in On behalf of Governor Schwarzenegger, I'm Senator Dave Cogdill.
