In light of the recent thwarting and ongoing investigation of a major terror plot in various UK locations, John Edwards should reconsider his statement in a speech to the Council On Foreign Relations on May 23. In that speech, Edwards stated, "The war on terror is a slogan designed only for politics, not a strategy to make America safe. It's a bumper sticker, not a plan."
From the Edwards for President website:
"It is now clear that George Bush's misnamed "war on terror" has backfired—and is now part of the problem.
"The war on terror is a slogan designed only for politics, not a strategy to make America safe. It's a bumper sticker, not a plan. ... But the worst thing about this slogan is that it hasn't worked.
...
"By framing this as a "war," we have walked right into the trap that terrorists have set—that we are engaged in some kind of clash of civilizations and a war against Islam."
It seems John Edwards has yet to realize that not only the United States, but Western Civilization is under attack and at war. From September 11th to the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh over his film about Islamic culture and the recent terror plots against our British allies, the western world and our tradition of individual rights, freedom, and mutual respect and tolerance are targets in this war. Perhaps John Edwards will remember these concerns today as he did when voting to authorize the war in Iraq.
