FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

As a long time Fresno County resident I am concerned about the health and welfare of our community and all its citizens, and the need to nurture a healthy economy, to create and maintain the needed jobs for working families, and give the dignity to the seniors who deserve to live out their lives with us in a healthy environment.

As a Certified Public Accountant, I am alarmed by the enormous deficits piled up by Fresno County under the stewardship of the present Board of Supervisors. At the end of fiscal year 2002, the county had a surplus of $126 million and a long-term debt of $231 million. Yet by June 2006, that $126 million surplus melted away into an astonishing deficit of $314 million, with long-term debt that skyrocketed to $855 million dollars. In less than four years, the County Supervisors have put us deep in the red.

Irresponsible spending has undermined our county’s ability to protect the public. Those supervisors recognized their failure, but were blinded by their appetite for power. One portrayed the county as being “broke”; another was quoted saying “we have been balancing the [books] with fake money”.

Our neighboring counties of Madera, Merced and Tulare enjoy healthy surpluses. Fresno County too – until 2002 – enjoyed a long history of financial stability and excellent bond rating. Why have the Supervisors of Fresno, the richest county in central valley, dug such a deep hole? There is no oil down there.  Forcing more taxes on Fresno County’s citizens is the wrong way.

My goal is to return to financial responsibility and excellent bond rating so every voter, young and old, can realize his or her dreams.

I am the right man for such a time as this and have been asked by many to announce the formation of an exploratory committee to seek the office of Supervisor District #2.
